Description

This compact palm is ideal for small, tight spaces indoors and is perfect as an accent piece on tables, shelves, and other surfaces. It is popular as an indoor palm due to its tolerance of lower temperatures, adaptations to low light, and its attractive appearance because of its light foliage growing in bunches around the thin trunks. This plant can reach up to 12 feet tall in its natural environment.

Tips

Brown tips may signal low humidity or under-watering. Yellow leaves may signal overwatering.

Lighting Requirements

Palms make great houseplants in part due to their tolerance for a range of lighting conditions. Most palms either prefer partial shade or are tolerant of it. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for the Parlor Palm.

Watering Needs

Palms prefer sandy, well-draining soil. Avoid any standing water, as overwatering and root rot can be a problem. Water after the top few inches of soil has dried out.

Humidity

Palms generally do not require any extra moisture and are tolerant to dry environments.

Temperature Preferences

Your Palm will be happy in average household temperatures, from 65 -75 degrees Fahrenheit. Some species, including the Parlor Palm, are particularly cold tolerant and are happy with temperatures as low as 55 degrees.

Fertilizer

Fertilize once a month in the spring and summer, ideally with palm fertilizer. Potassium deficiency is a fairly common issue for Palms. If you see the fronds turning yellow or brown, your Palm may require more nutrients.

Pet-Friendly

Both the Parlor Palm and Ponytail Palm are considered pet-friendly! You can feel safe having these plants around your pets.

Extra Care

Be careful not to over-prune your Palm! Many species of Palm continue to pull nutrients from fronds that have become yellow. Remove the fronds once they have browned.
