Description

When pruned annually, the Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat can remain between five and six feet tall. As such, it is an ideal citrus tree to grow in a container, or in a small garden.

The fruit of the Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat Tree stands out for its combination of both sweet flesh and sweet skin. When pruned annually, the Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat tree can remain between five and six feet tall. As such, it is an ideal citrus tree to grow in a container, or in a small garden.

Standard and Dwarf Kumquat trees do not grow well from seeds and are generally cultivated and propagated using rootstock of another citrus fruit. It is better to buy your Kumquat trees instead of growing them from seeds. Like most citrus fruits, Kumquats are self-pollinating but much hardier.

Meiwa Kumquat trees produce bright colored round to oval shaped sweet fruits with an edible rind & flesh with soft seeds in the interior.

Tree is small but fine. Delivery was a disaster. FedEx just put the package in the snow next to the mailbox, which is far away from the house. I’m surprised that the tree survived the hours outside in MA’s winter.

I am originally from Colorado newly relocated to North Georgia. I absolutely love Kumquats but rarely had the opportunity to enjoy them. I am so excited to receive my Meiwa tree yesterday. It arrived in perfect condition and so healthy looking. Under the grow light it went to adjust. Thank you Citrus.com for a great product. Wonder what I should purchase next?

  16. Sweet Kumquat Tree Duplicate of my Childhood

    Chandra Perkins

Growing up in southern Louisiana, I enjoyed picking Kumquats fresh from the tree. I am now a mom and want to share some of my childhood memories with my children. I searched the internet and happened upon your page. When I saw you sold this tree, I immediately purchased it. The shipping was inexpensive compared to other online nurseries. The tree was reasonably priced. I didn’t know what to expect. I was pleased that the shipment came earlier than scheduled. When I opened the package, I was pleasantly surprised. It was well packaged and very healthy. I am thrilled with my purchased.

Citrus Tree Care

Plant your Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat Tree in the ground, in early spring, after all chance of frost. Choose a sunny, well-drained location with sandy loam soil and plenty of added organic material such as compost.

If you are planting in a container, plant anytime and bring indoors if the temperature is forecasted to fall below freezing.

Water deeply when soil is dry down to two inches from the surface.

Fertilize with citrus fertilizer following the manufacturer’s directions and apply according to the tree’s size.

Always prune and clear away any dead branches, do not allow leaf debris or excessive mulch to stack against the trunk, and be sure the soil drains well and never remains soggy.

Fruit & Harvesting

Kumquat trees usually bloom in mid-summer. The fruit is typically ripe in winter, then the tree will recover from fruit production throughout spring. The best way to know if the fruit is ripe is to do periodic taste tests once the kumquats turn orange. Do not leave late remaining fruit on the tree. Harvest any fruit left at the end of the growing cycle so the tree can begin the process of resting before the next bloom.

Growing Zones

Advice

If you are in a colder climate, you can grow a Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat Tree in a container to bring indoors to a sunny window over winter. Citrus always prefers to be outside in direct sunlight, so once the threat of frost has passed, relocate your potted plant outdoors for the spring and summer months. The process of moving a kumquat tree from outdoors to in and back, may cause leaves to yellow and drop; this is normal. Fallen leaves will regrow once the tree is acclimated to its new position with each move.

FAQs

How tall will a dwarf kumquat tree get?

The Dwarf Meiwa Sweet Kumquat can be kept at a height of between five and six feet if you prune it once per year.

Do dwarf kumquat trees grow the same fruit as a full sized tree?

Yes. Dwarf varieties of kumquat trees are created by grafting the growing plant onto dwarf rootstock. This does not affect the size or quality of the fruit that the tree grows.

How do you eat a kumquat?

Kumquats can be eaten whole. Some like to squeeze out the more tart juice, and eat the sweeter skin. Kumquats can also be made into jams, jellies, and as an ingredient in drinks, baked goods, and desserts.

Are kumquat trees cold hardy?

Kumquat trees are some of the most cold-tolerant citrus trees. They are hardy to USDA Zones 8-11 and can be grown in the ground in these areas.

Do kumquat trees require any special care?

No. Kumquat trees are as easy to grow as any citrus tree. Kumquat trees, like all citrus, like well-drained soil that is rich in organic material and free from excessive mulch near the trunk. They do not tolerate “wet feet.”

What vitamins and minerals do kumquats contain?

Kumquats have vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B, and thiamin, niacin, pyridoxine, folates, pantothenic acid, carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, calcium, copper, potassium, manganese, iron, selenium and zinc.

What makes a Meiwa kumquat different?

Meiwa kumquats are sweeter overall than normal kumquats. The fruit is also a more round shape, as opposed to the oval shape of a regular kumquat. Both are eaten whole.
