Dwarf Key Limequats grow best in USDA Zones 8 – 11, but Key Limequats like these growing in hanging baskets can be easily brought indoors if you are in colder zones. In fact, the Dwarf Key Limequat is one of the best citrus trees to grow in a pot, because both the trees and fruit are small. You can keep a Dwarf Key Limequat in its hanging basket for many seasons by pruning the roots and repotting each year. If you eventually plant your Dwarf Key Limequat in the ground, it will grow up to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide.
Hanging Basket Care
Dwarf Key Limequats are tolerant of high heat and salt air, so they perfect for growing outdoors in coastal zones. Prune them in late winter and fertilize with citrus fertilizer every three months. Apply fertilizer in the amount suggested by the fertilizer manufacturer and water in well. Prune away any dead branches and low-growing suckers.
When growing a Key Limquat in its hanging basket container, be sure to give the tree as much direct sunlight as possible. Hang the basket in a south-facing window, or outside where it can get at least 6 hours of sun per day. The hanging baskets are designed with holes for drainage, so water them when the soil is dry to 2 inches deep and let the pot drain fully.
Fruit & Harvesting
The small Key Limequats are round to oval, two inches wide, and bright yellow-green. Each Limequat can have 3 to 10 seeds, and the flesh is juicy and has a tart orange taste. The juice is great for drinks, desserts, marinades, and other recipes that call for lemon or lime juice. The fruit is ready to pick when the skin turns bright yellow-green and the flesh is tart and filled with juice.
Dwarf Key Limequat Trees can have some small thorns on the branches so use gloves when picking the fruit. Mature Key Limequats can be picked easily by hand, and fully mature fruit may fall off the tree on its own. Harvested Key Limequats will last for about 2 weeks in a cool dry place or refrigerated. The juice can also be frozen for later use.
Advice
Dwarf Key Limequat Trees are cold-hardy down to 30ºF, but if you are growing a Dwarf Key Limequat in a hanging basket, bring it inside when any chance of frost or freezing is possible. Overwinter hanging basket citrus trees indoors in cold climates, then move them outside again once spring arrives. When you relocate a growing Key Limequat from outdoors to inside (or from in to out) it is normal for some leaves to fall. These shed leaves will regrow quickly and their falling does not harm the tree.
If you plant your Dwarf Key Limequat Tree in the ground choose a well-draining spot and give it frequent deep watering. Water newly planted Dwarf Key Limequat Trees once a week or when the surface of the soil is dry to 2 inches deep. Water established trees when rainfall is scarce and fertilize frequently. Be sure that the soil always drains well, mulch with organic materials, and always remove fallen fruit and limbs from the tree base.
