Pilea Peperomia

Description

A regular feature on many popular houseplants lists, the Pilea (or Chinese money plant) is often included in Scandinavian interior designs its bright green leaves help it stand out against white walls and provide a colorful contrast. Its round leaves have also given it the moniker of the UFO plant.

Tips

The Pilea prefers bright light and requires soil to be drained between waterings. The large leaves also tend to accumulate dust so a light watering or dusting once a week is beneficial

Lighting Requirements

Pilea prefer to be positioned in bright, indirect light. Though they are technically a member of the Succulent family, exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. Be sure to rotate your Pilea frequently to avoid lopsided growth towards the sun.

Watering Needs

Water roughly once a week, or after the top few inches of soil have dried out. Water your Pilea thoroughly but be sure to avoid any standing water that may cause root rot. In higher light or warmer conditions, water more frequently.

Humidity

Your Pilea does not require any extra humidity and is happy in a more arid environment.

Temperature Preferences

Pilea are happy in an average household temperature range, from 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing it next to heat vents in the winter, this could cause the leaves to droop.

Fertilizer

Pilea do not require heavy fertilization. With a diluted or half-strength fertilizer, feed your plant once every 6-8 weeks during the spring and summer. You can skip fertilizing in the winter.

Pet-Friendly

Your Pilea is harmless for pets unless ingested in very large quantities, which could cause vomiting and irritation.

Extra Care

Pilea can be susceptible to damage from the fluoride and chlorine in tap water. If you notice your plant leaves spotting, try using filtered water or leave the tap water out overnight to remove some of the chemicals.
